…that there are places in this world that aren’t made out of stone. That there’s something inside that they can’t get to, that they can’t touch. That’s yours.Andy Dufrense
My stomach slowly sank as the reality set in. Governor DeWine did not include gyms in the first phase of reopening in Ohio. At least two more week with the gym doors shuttered.
As a small business owner that is a terrifying feeling. How many members will cancel their membership? How will I pay May’s rent? How will I pay my staff?
Denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance.
But what did I accept?
I accepted the one thing my life and faith is built upon.
Maybe that’s why The Shawshank Redemption is my favorite movie. It’s all about hope. In the darkest of times and in the most hopeless of settings, hope still thrives.
It’s a 2 hour and 20 minute film. But if you want the Cliff’s Notes version start it up at 1:05:50 and watch through 1:16:30. Warning: Language.
I’ll let you watch the 11 minute clip. It’s on Netflix.
I’ll set the scene. Andy Dufresne is six years into a double life sentence for a crime he didn’t commit. He finally got the attention of the State and got a large donation to the prison library. Among the donations is an album of The Marriage of Figaro, composed by Mozart.
Friends, we’re in a bit of Shawshank ourselves. A prison sentence for a crime we didn’t commit. No freedom to come and go and do as we please.
But, as Andy says, there are places in this world that aren’t made out of stone. That there’s something inside that they can’t get to, that they can’t touch. That’s yours.
For a brighter day. For a purpose. For a calling. For rising to the occasion because someone it depending on you. Hope are the wings that lift you above the prison walls.
The wild thing about hope is that the destination is uncertain. No one knows exactly what heaven is like. But I hope for it. No one knows exactly what the next few weeks will bring. But I hope for it. No one knows what the final word will be. But I hope for it.
And hope will be my song. Hope will be my banner. Hope is worth waking up and fighting for. Who’s with me?
Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies.
